Athabasca University, Canadas Open University, is one of the worlds foremost and fastest growing institutions specializing in online and distance education. Anyone 16 year of age or older is eligible to enroll, regardless previous educational experience, and students may begin courses or programs at any time. Distance delivery methods allow students to progress at their own pace from their home or workplace, so completing post-secondary studies is convenient and affordable. AU offers more than 700 individual courses in more than 60 undergraduate and graduate programs. Many students complete AU degrees, diplomas, or certificates; others take specific courses to round out their studies at other institutions; and still others take courses simply for their own personal development. Graduate programs offered at AU include Master of Distance Education, Executive MBA, Master of ArtsIntegrated Studies, Master of Health Studies, Master of Nursing, Master of Counselling, and Master of ScienceInformation Systems. A variety of advanced graduate diplomas are also offered. The broad selection of undergraduate offerings include bachelors degrees (and/or post- diplomas) programs in administration, arts, commerce, general studies, health administration, human resources and labour relations, management, nursing (post-RN), professional arts, science, and science and computing information systems. A number of certificate and university diploma programs are also offered, and students can choose to take individual courses in many disciplines. Service department staff members, members of faculty, and tutors assist students with their studies. The university employs nearly 1100 people, including more than 240 faculty members and 330 part-time tutors. About 34,000 students per year now enroll in AU courses, and satisfaction rates are very high. According to the 2004 Alberta Post-secondary Graduate Outcome Survey, more than 98 percent of students who have completed a course say that they would recommend AU to others.
